Dear Professor Erturk,
The students who attend The University of North Carolina at Charlotte pay a substantial amount of money to earn a college degree; but the real question is: Are they getting their money’s worth? The students are entitled to the best education this institution has to offer. With this being said, I am confident that my experiences and skills are suitable for the tasks and the position.
I understand it is unusual for you to hire an undergraduate student with no prior work experience; however, even though I have no practical work experience I can still offer my profound people skills, and unique thinking that would be beneficial for learning. For example, because I am an extroverted it is easier for me to make communication and collaborate with groups of people I don’t know.
My involvement with academia strengthened my interpersonal skills, making communication with others straightforward and exhibiting my leadership skills in an articulate manner. Without sounding too pretentious my biggest strength is my decision making. Why is decision making my biggest strength? Decision-making is based on the foundation of knowledge and logic, as well as applying good ethics. With this being said, I believe that I’m impartial as well as I think about the repercussions of my actions. Everybody has weaknesses, for example my viewpoint may hinder my ability to see the bigger picture. I also tend to digress off the main topic, and can find myself discussing trivial things.
It is my conviction that my expertise is relevant for The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It would be my honor to have the opportunity to meet with you to discuss further about my qualifications. Thank you for your consideration, and I have attached a copy of my resume for your review. Please feel free to contact me at (828) 290-5200 or sending me an email to my account.
Sincerely,
Hiral Merchant

Why do you go to college? You don’t go to college to make money; you go to college to get an education. We become educated, so that we’re ready to go into the professional world prepared. Once we’re prepared it would be opportune to find a job that suits your expertise and shares similar beliefs. A simple way to figure out if the company you are applying to meets your standards is by doing a quick investigation, locating outside information about the employer, and analyzing the information. The company that I have started my investigation on is Duke Energy.
Duke Energy is a top tier electric power company that offers jobs, internships, and co-op opportunities for adults and students. For instance, Information Technology, Nuclear, Power Generation, and Transmission are examples of different fields Duke Energy has to offer. Being an aspiring Computer Scientist, I focused my investigation in their Information Technology field (IT). After doing a little bit of research I was surprised with the outcome.
The IT field leads you with three paths: Business Applications, Computer Operations, and Technology Governance. These three paths are the foundation of Duke Energy’s IT department and deal with Designing & Supporting Network and Server Infrastructures, Developing & Supporting business applications, Managing Security Services, Implementing & Managing Web & E-mail Services, and Managing Workstation Services. For example, if I enjoy learning about networking when I take the class over summer, I may look into the Designing & Supporting Network and Server Infrastructures because I’ve already had exposure to working with virtual machines. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I want to do specifically as a Computer Scientist after I graduate; but there is no doubt that a big company like Duke Energy offers many options to find something I may like.
Having over 7.8 million customers Duke Energy has been able to keep up their outstanding reputation for over 150 years and is the United States largest electric company; but don’t be fooled because big companies can have big problems.
Lately, Duke Energy’s CEO has been docked $600,000 in salary for the mishap of the Coal Ash Pollution. Since this violated the Clean Waters Act, Duke Energy spent over 192 million dollars in clean up, legal fees, and fines. Duke Energy may have lost a lot of money for their negligence; however, we can concede that they are capable for high amounts of remuneration, known for being responsible, and are reputable, but I contend that it’s their hardworking, trustworthy employees and interns that build their credibility.
What does it take to be an intern of Duke Energy’s IT department? Assuming that the person of interest is a college student, you must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, as well as currently pursing a degree in CS, CIS, MIS, or an IT related major. Duke Energy does desire applicants with experience in Design and Development, Operating Systems, Networking, and Database Administration Exposure. The characteristics that Duke Energy looks for in their applicants are leadership, self-driven, professional written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
Given these points, I consider myself being applicable for the intern position in Duke Energy’s IT department because I meet most the requirements; however, since I do not have exposure to Operating Systems and Networking yet, I may not be listed as a priority for the position. Fortunately, I am taking both these classes this summer, and for this reason I will be germane for the position in the fall semester.

Introduction
Are you willing to break bones, be single-minded, and do anything to get yourself to the top? If you were a businessman then yes; however, in the technology field it would be unethical! When computers first came out, Computer scientists did not have as much “power;" ethical issues were practically non-existent compared to today. Now computers and their applications are used for many things such as messaging and banking. Without proper coding ethics being applied in our programming, we're more vulnerable to risk.
Project Summary
It’s the 21st century, which means computers and smartphones are ubiquitous. Since computers have become essential for our functionality as a society, it becomes imperative to teach Software Engineers the importance of ethics, and how unethical coding could entice immoral decisions.
Motivation
Programmers go through college taking several programming courses, learning several programming languages; but the importance of ethical coding is not stressed enough. The main idea is to create a “discussion” based class to explain and justify the importance of Ethical coding.
Objectives
- Students will understand the difference between ethical and unethical coding.
- Students will be more prepared for the workplace.
- Students will learn valuable moral skills.
- Students will learn importance of Validation vs. Verification.
- Students will practice writing Beautiful code.
Conclusion
The budget of this course would have to be decided amongst the College that would like to adopt the program. The program was designed to help students understand the importance of ethics in coding, so that students will apply the learned knowledge in the work field morally, or whenever creating applications regarding software. Since we're constantly shifting towards a technologically dependent society, application of good ethics is imperative for our privacy, and safety.
